Tumbbad

Tumbbad

Movie Info:

Tumbbad is a unique period horror film by Rahi Anil Barve that makes use of Indian mythology along with a story revolving around human greed. The story is set in India’s rural areas in the early 20th century where the protagonist Vinayak Rao (Sohum Shah) is obsessed with a treasure said to be hidden in the Tumbbad village. This treasure is associated with an ancient god, Hastar, who has been cursed as the destructive god of greed and hunger, and it is clear that it is when Vinayak is after this treasure that he encounters horrific supernatural events. Tumbbad scores particularly high on ambiance, sights, and conceptual ingredients, which usually aren’t found in conventional horror films, except, of course, for a sense of terror, that is, ambition and greed.

Summary:

Sohum Shah as Vinayak Rao

Mohammad Samad as young Vinayak Rao

Jyoti Malshe as Vinayak Rao’s mother

Ronjini Chakraborty as Vinayak’s wife

Positive Aspects:

Cinerama: ‘Tumbbad’ is perhaps the first Indian horror film that takes folklore and makes psychological horror out of it. Here the themes of greed and desire are always present but come together with powerful factors of the supernatural making it simply fascinating.

Artistic Elements: The cinematography and visual design of this movie is terrific. From the dark, rain filled Tumbbad to the gory and brute hideout of hastar, lightings and settings are used to create an intimidating environment.

Philosophical Depth: While Tumbbad is a horror film, it also presents a lot more and evolves the understanding of the main focus — greed that robs people — in a diacritical diversity through its characters and stories.

Negative Aspects:

Pacing: The movie works on sluggishness, especially during it’s first half and largely, the film bodes no well for those with hasty horror rushes.

Niche Appeal: It may also be a consequence of the thematic darkness of the film — and the background philosophy or puzzles — however, it is unlikely to prosper with those looking for something easier or average entertainment.
